Our language assistant Carrie
Hi! My name is Carrie, and I’m from Durham in the Northeast of England. I think it’s one of the most beautiful areas of the UK. I love living there; the region has so much character and history. Durham itself is a very historic city, with a castle and a cathedral on a river peninsula. It has cobbled streets, old bridges, and quiet riverside paths, and I love spending time in its cosy bookshops and cafes. It’s a lovely place to live as it’s a small city with a friendly community, yet close to the rugged countryside of the North.
.
I study Classics and German at Oriel College, Oxford. I’m fascinated by how the ancient world continues to influence modern Europe and the wider world – especially through language, art, and ideas. My focus is the late Republic and the early Roman Empire; I study Cicero’s works and oratory, as well as the first Roman emperors. Alongside this, I study 1st-4th century Roman art, where I love exploring how visual culture expressed shifting ideas of authority and self-representation. I also study German literature from the 19th century to the present, and I love seeing the ways these two subjects intersect – how classical thought appears in more modern writing. When I’m not studying for my degree, I enjoy reading, going for walks, running, and knitting. I love to make my own clothes!
I’m very excited to be spending this year with you!
Carrie
